YES. I recall a few discussions around this regarding female characters of color as well, where being portrayed as "soft" and as beautiful people to be desired/protected is actually quite rare for non-white female characters in the media, black women especially, and is therefore subversive just for that. And the same thing here - the happy ending isn't the safe, pat option; it's the rare one.
