Also, like: I think this is one of things where people who haven't been there and haven't spent much time thinking about it sort of miss the point. Like, yeah, the hero gets the girl and rides off into the sunset is an eminently subvertable genre convention.... for straight characters. For queer characters, a happily-ever-after is subversive, because we don't get those happy endings very often on TV. The same trope can come across very, very differently depending on who you're applying it to.
