Like, yeah, the hero gets the girl and rides off into the sunset is an eminently subvertable genre convention.... for straight characters. For queer characters, a happily-ever-after is subversive, because we don't get those happy endings very often on TV. The same trope can come across very, very differently depending on who you're applying it to.
