I've found a new use for songvids

Cranky 8-month-olds love them. :D

Since my work schedule is flexible right now, I've been babysitting my cousin's baby on Wednesdays. My exposure to babies (as an adult, anyway) is relatively limited, and the kid spends a lot of time staring at me with an expression that looks an awful lot like this icon of [livejournal.com profile] villainny's, obviously expecting me to be doing something quite different from what I'm doing. (I don't know what she thinks I'm supposed to be doing; it's just very clearly Not This.)

Most baby games kinda bore me senseless, and most of my pastimes are stultifyingly boring to her, but I did find one thing we have in common. She's utterly captivated by song videos -- specifically, fast-paced and bright ones, with lots of clip changes. She waves her little arms around and squeaks happily for some, and stares in total fascination at others. (Sam and Dean get waving and squeaking; John and Rodney get a lot of staring. I'm not sure what's up with that.) I feel kind of guilty because some of them, especially the SPN ones, have some creepy or disturbing video clips, but they go by pretty quick and I'm at least mostly sure that she's much too young to either understand or remember what she's seeing. So far this one seems to be her favorite.

That is too cute! Which music does she like the most? Think of all the songvids you can now go and search for - make a chart on reactions :) heh. And yea, never thought of that as a baby distraction.

Heeeee! That is awesome! Go vids! That's a seriously handy power to have - entertaining cranky babies! Also, it might set them on interesting paths later in life. We shall see~!

Also, your icon is made of win. *giggles*

Heh. I fail at entertaining babies. I visited my little niece last weekend and as soon as she was in my arms she started to wail (and apparently she's usually a quiet and happy baby). And later when I just tried to get her to look at me, all my making faces and attempts to wave things failed to get any approval from her. It wouldn't have been so discouraging if she had just wanted to stick with her parents whom she knows much better, but my sister and her boyfriend were visiting too and that was the first time said boyfried met her and she adored him, constantly trying to turn towards him, even though he didn't do anything. I felt kind of betrayed.

Well, the Winchesters really are such total eye-candy (despite the depths that lurk beneath those oh so pretty surfaces) but obviously John and Rodney require much more serious contemplation. That's my theory (which is mine).

But I am seriously impressed by her reactions either way. I've never been able to get the kids in my life to watch songvids as a form of entertainment - and believe me, I've tried!

Edit: But maybe I need to make a vid to Morningtown Ride or Puff the Magic Dragon or something like that? No, maybe best not to.
