SGA:4x16 - Trio

That was awesome.

This is what I WANT from this show. Neat little episodes that showcase the Pegasus Galaxy. Danger that doesn't always have to rely on bad guys. Tightly plotted, well-written episodes that make me laugh and squee and gasp. Fun character interactions, and unexpected heroism, and little indications that the characters all have lives outside their work. Girl bonding! Rodney joining in girl bonding! Missions that go wrong in goofy and dorky and unexpectedly dangerous ways. It just makes the place feel real.

This show has been rocking the women this season. I think this is seriously one of my favorite episodes this season, even though none of my usual "favorite" character relationships were showcased. This is the show I want to watch each week -- no big giant space battles (though they're fun from time to time), just ultra-dorky space explorers bumbling around and succeeding in spite of themselves -- moments of real person heroism rather than big grand gestures.

I want more like this. MORE MORE MORE.

Oooh, yeah, this goes under the "good, must re-watch" column :D

Though I'm disappointed in fandom here: Were you all so blinded by the trio that you forgot about John Sheppard sucking a pink lollipop at the very beginning? I thought I'd come back to a net entirely overcome with John/lollipop icons!!!

Hee, I'd like to see the scene where Ronon finds out about the "drink". Especially because it didn't have to mean anything ;P Though, for some reason, if I had to choose, I mean, if I was forced to, I think I'd go with Rodney/Keller over Ronon/Keller. Hummm... more potential for entertaiment?

Also loved the mini freak-out Rodney has over the girl talk! He takes it so seriously ;P
Actually pretty much loved all of Rodney's monologues here.

I missed the scene where they all hobble back through the gate and Sheppard comes down the stairs to greet them and he yells "What happened??" and his face says "I leave you alone on a friendly planet for five hours and you come back like this??"

Also also: we can't tell our parents, we'll get in trouble! FTW!!

finally: a fic with McKay and Sheppard falling down a hole and a broken leg... I think I read something similar lately, and it also involved Hypothermia, and it was great ;P Though if the bunny humps your leg, I'm sure we'd all love to read the temperate climate version :D

Yeah, the Zelenka bashing made me sad :(

[identity profile] army-rat.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched this episode and wondered which direction they were going with the Keller/McKay scene at the end. My friend Dena had an explanation. Her idea is that Keller missed out on all the party things in high school and college and now she's making up for it. Not in a sleeping around way, but in a flirty, let's find a place and have a good time and get to know each other way.

[identity profile] ticiathethief.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I had the same thought. Love that story. :D

I loved this episode, I was laughing so much during nearly the whole hour. (Well, 40 minutes, fast forwarding through the commercials.)

I thought the Keller/Rodney scene at the end was kind of sweet in a fun, flirty way. I didn't get the feeling that Keller is wanting to "Start" something with Rodney, more of a friendship thing, which I love.

When Rodney fell down the hole, I said "Rodney Whumping!" and my husband rolled his eyes at me. Hmph! I've been on a Rodney Whumping kick lately... reading the fanfic, that is. :D

Ok, but seriously, Sam, you're comparing Rodney almost dying in a submerged puddlejumper to being stuck in transporter? With Zelenka? Didn't like that part so much. I liked the other Sam/Rodney interactions, though. I think it's nice to see them talking without him falling all over himself because he's got a crush on her. Obviously he's moved on. He wanted to see boobs, yes, but Keller's as much as Sam's, LOL. The part about knowing what a 10 year old boy would want to see just cracked me up.

And I looooooved Shep and his Dum Dum.

They *are* doing a good job with Keller. I could go either way with that final scene with her and Rodney -- I saw it as being a little more than platonic since her comment harked back to the earlier reference to Rodney having trouble figuring out relationships, but it's clearly a "no strings attached" offer, at the same time. It does make me grin to imagine Ronon finding out about it, though.

I did like Keller a lot in this episode. I think the only one so far where I've had trouble with her was in Quarantine -- I liked the "MacGyvering" of the escape plan (even if it didn't work) but her attempts to commiserate with Ronon just made her look hopelessly sheltered and young! But I do think she's starting to come into her own as a character.

And, ha, I hadn't even thought about that, with Carter! For a bunch of geniuses, they can certainly be dense at times. :D

LOL, oh yes, much love for the scene with the lollipop! I really would have loved to get a Sheppard reaction to everything at the end, but aww well! The rest of the episode made up for it. :D

Heeee~! Yes, something vaguely familiar about all of this, wasn't there. :D

I really do like how they're developing Sam and Rodney's friendship. This is what I'd hoped they'd move on to, after Redemption -- friendly, a bit flirty, but mutually respectful. They're not pushing Sam and Rodney as a couple, even now that he's no longer with Katie, and while I really don't have a *problem* with Sam and Rodney as a couple per se, I'm glad they've gone a different direction with it. (But oh yes, the thing about flashing the kids utterly cracked me up! Yes, he remembers what it was like to be a 10-year-old boy, all right!)

I think that fits perfectly well with what we've seen onscreen. And there is no reason to expect, from what little we've seen of her relationship with Ronon, that she wouldn't be free to flirt with other guys, either. She almost kissed the guy, but that's a looong step from a committed relationship. (Though the idea of Ronon and Rodney at loggerheads over Keller is highly amusing to me.)

I'm actually thrilled at how this season has been developing other character relationships WITHOUT sacrificing the Sheppard/McKay friendship which is, for me, the heart of the show. They've just found a really, really nice balance. On an admittedly selfish level, I had no problem at all with the heavy levels of Sheppard and McKay last season, and I was a little worried (knowing that the spotlight wouldn't really be on them this season, and especially given the end of Sunday) that they were planning on pulling them apart and pairing them off with other characters in a friendshippy sort of way, kind of like SG-1 did with Jack and Daniel as the series progressed. But, if anything, this season has actually given us a John and Rodney friendship that's more intensely close than the lighter tone of earlier seasons, while still giving them space to explore their friendships with other people -- it's just been very, very nicely done!

Well, I did love Missing, but I agree with you that Keller was very likeable in this episode compared to past ones -- I think this is the most I've liked her since Adrift. Her scenes with Rodney were especially fun -- and come to think of it, maybe that's part of it for me, because I really loved her with Rodney in Adrift too. He seems to bring out a better side of her (the smart/funny/competent side) than she displays around the fighter-types. I have no clue if they're intending to head in a shippy direction with Rodney/Keller, but as much as I like the idea of Ronon/Keller, I'd be perfectly okay with this pairing too.

You know, I honestly didn't see any bashing -- I was talking to my sister about that, and she was bothered by that too, but to me Sam's comment just sounded like one of those foot-in-mouth things that sounds good in your *head* and then falls utterly flat when you say it; and then that got Rodney off on the sort of jealous-rivalry thing that he does tend to do with Radek. So, I didn't see it as bashing so much as just awkward.

Deleted Scene from Trio

[personal profile] leesa_perrie 2008-02-13 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently it was explained (about Ronon) in a scene that was filmed and ended up on the cutting room floor. I hope it's alright to post it here, it will (hopefully, fingers crossed) be in the deleted scenes on the DVDs, and it's not spoilery as it's not canon.

Carter: So...you seeing anyone?
Keller: What?
Carter: Around the base, you seeing anyone?
Keller: I dunno...I had a moment with - with this...guy. He’s not exactly easy to read so...I guess the short answer is “no”. You?
Carter: Well, I’m the boss, so I can’t really...
Keller: Right Anyone back home?
Carter: Uhm...
Keller: Un-huh, I thought so. Give it up.
Carter: Well, it’s complicated.
Keller: Show me a relationship that isn’t.
Carter: He’s in Washington...I’m here.
Keller: Ouch. Long distance relationship.
Carter: He’s going to retire soon, so maybe -
Keller: Really! Retire? So...an older man, huh?
Carter: Not that much older.
Keller: Washington, older man...is he like a Senator or something? Someone famous? Would I know him?
Carter: Probably not.

As you can imagine, the S/J shippers are going crazy over this!

Oh, interesting! Nice to get that little bit of backstory (even if it's not exactly canon) -- and I *do* think it works pretty well with how the characters have been shown on the show. (Heh, I do think it's interesting that Sam's still interested in Jack, though, at least a little bit. Yeah, I'm sure the S/J people are going nuts!)

I'm thrilled about getting deleted scenes on the DVDs! It's something I'm really surprised they haven't done already, but it'll be awesome to get them for season 4.

Someone in Joe M's comment section decided that is wasn't proof of Sam/Jack, but Sam/Hammond!! Someone else suggested George W Bush (only in SG it's President Hayes, so maybe him, as yet another person suggested?)!! LOL!

I like the idea of Sam/Hammond - if only to annoy the S/J shippers - but only 'annoy' in a teasing and joking manner, of course, such as Sheppard when he 'annoys' McKay!!!

Yeah, the idea of Ronon and Rodney at loggerheads over Keller is fun to think about. But considering how the characters play on screen I'm not sure that Ronon would be willing to go that far over Keller. I think he would assume that since Keller and Rodney are from the same planet that Rodney would have the advantage, plus I think that Ronon would be dissappointed in Keller's taste by her seeing Rodney.

I *loved* this episode, and I wasn't even expecting to like it all that much! I think I've been really enjoying the small-scale, character-driven episodes; it's a nice change from the grand epic space-battles, and it's really more what I watch the show for.
