I've had some things hanging around for a long time that I've meant to rec but never got around to it.

Doctor Who:
2000 years of boredom, or how Rory Williams made some friends by [livejournal.com profile] puppetdumbly - I don't read much Doctor Who fic, but I lurked on [livejournal.com profile] dwsanta this year and stumbled across this little gem about what Rory did during his 2000 years of solitude. It's awesome and such a wonderful missing scene for the episode.

From [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa - I expect that I don't really need to rec gen stories to the gen-leaning portions of my flist because you probably read all of them, but you all might have missed a couple of rather neat team stories that also include incidental pairings:

Forbidden Planet by [personal profile] saffronhouse, PG - There is a very background, established McKay/Sheppard relationship, but mostly it's about the team hiding out on Earth after an attack on one of them, with a neat Ronon POV and lovely team interactions.

Welcome Home by [livejournal.com profile] penknife, NC-17 - This is a "Return" tag and it contains an NC-17 John/Teyla scene, but otherwise it's a series of little vignettes with John rotating between different people on Atlantis as they all settle back in. It's a lovely slice of (Atlantis) life.

I swear there was more multifandom stuff I wanted to rec, but I can't remember what now ...

I just rec'd this at [livejournal.com profile] stargategenrec, but I wanted to mention it here as well - if you like teamfic and AUs, there's a must-read one for you: Bright Wings and the sequel that was just posted, Bright City on Dark Waters, by [livejournal.com profile] snarkydame. The SGA team are technology scavengers ("Sheppard's Salvage") in a steampunk-ish Atlantis, making their living by diving to recover the salvaged tech of the Old Ones from the sunken part of the city. Until they stumble onto a dangerous secret - plunging them into deadly peril, and their City into political turmoil. The world-building is luscious, the writing is gorgeous and evocative, and oh, the team. (And the h/c doesn't disappoint, either. *g*)

Over the last few days I've read through the archives of Freakangels, and now I have to wait for new installments with the rest of the world (woe!). Twelve psychically gifted teenagers cause the end of the world ... we've all heard this one before. But the story begins six years later, when they're trying to atone for their actions by picking up the pieces and restarting civilization in the post-apocalyptic ruins of what used to be London. It's not destroying the world that's hard ... it's fixing it. Especially when you have the powers of a minor god and have to struggle with the temptation to use them. The archive starts here and it updates with new installments on Fridays.

On a more fannish note, [livejournal.com profile] fkficfest is posting stories in the Forever Knight Ficfest. FK is a fandom in which I've never written or been socially active, but like TOS, it seems to be one of my touchstone fandoms -- every so often I'll rewatch a few episodes and dip back in to see if there's any interesting new fic around. They're posting two stories a day 'til the fest is over, and I've been really enjoying them. Two I particularly liked so far: A Contradiction in Terms by [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood is a wonderful Nick & Nat character piece with a lovely Natalie and a light, graceful handling of the complicated and conflicted relationship between Nick, Nat and Janette. And Sugar and Spice by [livejournal.com profile] malinaldarose is a gen casefile story in which Jenny Schanke gets drawn into a murder investigation after she finds a classmate's drowned body; it features a wonderfully brave and resourceful Jenny, and an interesting mystery. (The fandom's handling of Jenny and Myra was always one of my favorite things about FK fandom, really; as characters, they never even appeared in the show itself -- well, we saw Myra from a distance one time -- but fandom does a wonderful job of fleshing them out and making them into sympathetic, three-dimensional people.)

ETA: Another rec, this one for SGA - Germination by [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings (Jennifer/Rodney, NC-17, light kink) is a really enjoyable "Seed" tag, with great character voices, that worked beautifully for me in the context of the episode. I especially liked the characters' open negotiation of their sexual boundaries, which isn't something you see much in fic.

Signups at [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon have been closed! I will be sending out assignments this weekend.

And [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts is live! Here are links to fic, fic, fic! There will be new rounds of fic reveals for the next two days as well. See if you can guess which ones I wrote. :) My first (of three) gift fics is the first part of a Leverage/Dresden Files crossover (yes, really!) that promises to be a lot of fun. I've only had a chance to read a few of them so far, but I've really enjoyed all the ones I've tried, especially this one: California Girls - Star Trek: AOS; Uhura & Gaila; really fantastic Uhura POV.

Also, I'm pretty sure that most people in the McKay/Sheppard end of fandom already know about [livejournal.com profile] chkc's adorable chibis, but for everyone else, I came across this little cartoon Rodney, which is ... well, I really don't have words for how adorable this is: Rodney as a hermit crab.

sholio: (SGA-Teyla with Keller)
As I've mentioned occasionally, I really love stories about messy, complicated, unhappy relationships -- I don't think I'd want a steady diet of them, but it's rare in fandom to get stories in fandom that treat romance as the kind of messy, easily breakable thing that it is in real life, and I'm always delighted to stumble across them.

So I wanted to rec this story: And So the End by [livejournal.com profile] bluflamingo. It's post-season-five Keller/McKay (with blink-and-you-miss-it background John/Cam), and I went into the story very nervous, because it's rare to find a Keller/McKay breakup fic that I feel is fair to both the characters. But I really loved it -- the emotions ring true, and the sense of an existing world around the protagonists, with other characters' lives woven in and out of Rodney and Jennifer's unraveling relationship, is very well done. I recommend this one particularly to Keller fans; it's an excellent Jennifer POV and really rang true for her. :)

(Side note: I know I have a lot of fellow Rodney fen on my f'list so I feel that I should warn that this story throws a fairly unflattering light on Rodney's dubious relationship skills; personally, I think it's consistent with how he's shown in canon (not bashing, in other words) and I can see him behaving as he does in this story, but you may disagree, so I didn't want to send you in there unwarned! This is not a happy story, and it's not a story that's going to leave you warm and fuzzy about the pairing.)

I just read a really neat John/Rodney fic over at [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa: Never Quite What You Expect by [livejournal.com profile] propinquitine (PG, 7400 wds). I really adore how this story takes a number of fandom cliches (from aliens-made-them-do-it to drunken sex to evil exes to matchmaking) and turns them on their head to substitute the much more prosaic, and likely, alternatives. I am not a big romance person but I really love slow, believable, down-to-earth romance that kinda happens by accident while people are doing other things, and this story mashed down all my buttons really hard. Plus it's sweet, and friendshippy, and the banter is lovely!

First off, I wrote this small Whaleverse ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] naye (G, 1300 words, John/Rodney plus team and, of course, whales). THE CRACK, IT JUST WILL NOT STOP.

[livejournal.com profile] rheanna27 recorded my story Between the Lines as a podfic; here is the post at her journal with all relevant download information. If you like it, let her know how awesome she is! :D

And a couple of recs for good, and under-appreciated, SGA fic I've read lately, which I can't rec at genrec because it isn't gen:

Throwing out your frown and just smiling at the sound by [livejournal.com profile] less_star (John/OMC, John & Rodney friendship) - [livejournal.com profile] less_star wrote this as a bonus-round fic for one of my prompts in [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa, and it's really delightful. I love the sense of weariness and resignation that pervades the story, as John struggles to acknowledge the idea that he could actually be happy; it's a wonderful John piece as well as a nice friendship story.

A Moment Out of Time by [livejournal.com profile] skinscript (John/Rodney/Elizabeth, tag for Adrift/Lifeline) - This is really a gorgeous look at Elizabeth's sense of dislocation in her new nanite-enhanced body, and I loved how the characters' closeness and connection to each other comes through.

Aside from that - and waiting for the archive to go live - I've run a few errands and now I'm curled up with Internet and fic and Stephen King's Under the Dome waiting for me later.

I just read Cakewalk over at [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa (gen, 4200 wds, anon.) and absolutely loved it to bits -- just the kind of John & Rodney friendship and h/c that I've been craving. Another thing that made me dearly love this fic is that, as I've complained in the past, there is so very little gen fic about gay/bi/etc. characters that's not a prelude to a pairing; this fic is a delightful exception. I also thoroughly loved another of the sga_santa fics that I read last night, Are You Naked Under That Thing?, another John & Rodney friendship gen one (despite what the title implies *g*), in this case a post-Atlantis fic with the wonderful implication of all the characters growing old together that I so adore.

The Magical Number Seven (Plus or Minus Two) by [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur - (gen, 61K words)

This story was just ... wow. I think it's assumed its place with my very favorite novel-length fanfic in this fandom. It involves two twists of canon: "Tabula Rasa" (they don't get their memories back and have to reinvent themselves and their place in the galaxy) and "This Mortal Coil" (the RepliTeam aren't killed). And what emerges when these two plot threads are twined together is a really incredible exploration of identity -- of who we are, and what makes us us, and what aspects of our connections to other people can transcend memory and self (and what can't). I guess I ought to warn you that the stories I love most are those with a little bittersweetness to them -- there were parts of this that just broke me because of what they'd lost, and didn't even know they'd lost; the distrust is sometimes hard to handle -- but then they'll turn right around and love each other so much it hurts.

There is a character death warning: more information on that if you want it --> minor/supporting characters only - Radek, Caldwell; none of the team.

If comparisons to other stories are useful to you, this story reminded me a little of [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna's stories -- it's kind of got the same feeling to it that a lot of hers do -- and also reminded me a bit of Ltlj's space pirate AU.

... scraped together from my reading over the last week or two.

I just read this today while I ate dinner: The Dinosaur and the Dragon Lady. This isn't fanfic, but a free online novella, and it's really wonderful -- given the title and the fact that I'm reccing this to a bunch of sci-fi nerds *g*, I should point out that there are neither dinosaurs nor dragons in evidence, but it's a very sweet love story that started out like any rom-com ever made (staid, set-in-his-ways widower meets flamboyant, free-spirited, beautiful downstairs neighbor ... *snore*) and then went a direction I was totally not expecting it to go. And the characters are lovely. It made me cry, and I don't cry at fiction very often (though I seem to say that every time I do, and I seem to say it a lot, so maybe it's not as true as I think it is ...).

Heteronormativity, Gender Construction, and Nonverbal Signalling in Intercultural Communication: A Comedy by [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin (PG-13; Mensa-verse; John/Teyla, Rod/Katie, and a pairing involving Keller that I'm not going to spoil because it's too, too funny if you, like Keller in the story, don't see it coming -- but it doesn't involve any universe's Rodney, FYI) - This story was hilarious and sweet and just all the way around awesome. John/Teyla isn't a pairing I normally go for, but I really went for it as depicted here (which, actually, made me figure out a lot of why it doesn't work for me normally), and [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin has done a really wonderful job of incorporating all of the major and minor characters to offer a look at the Mensa AU Atlantis that is complex and believable (and funny).

Those Who Favor Fire by [livejournal.com profile] anna_bird is a long, plotty, kinda creepy post-EatG story featuring Teyla and Keller. It manages to be both an action-type story and a complicated relationship story, with both women struggling to work out problems in their personal lives and with each other. Really neat; it doesn't offer any tidy endings, but rather, it's complicated and messy like real life is complicated and messy. Only, you know, with aliens. (Warning for death of a very minor character from the show.)
