Trick or Treat Exchange letter

Thank you for writing for me! :) I will admit that I'm generally a fluff aficionado and kind of a wuss when it comes to gore and sad/tragic endings, but I've offered a number of "trick" prompts for things I think I'd enjoy. Hopefully my prompts will give you a good feel for the kind of thing I like.

In every one of these fandoms, I love every requested character and would be very happy with any of them that you wish to write. I don't have a unique prompt for every possible character or pairing, but feel free to mix'n'match however you want. Most of my prompts can be used for any individual character or group of characters in that fandom.

Vid: Guardians of the Galaxy - What You Wanted (remastered)

And here's the other vid I made with cam footage this spring, now remastered with HD clips. As with the Holy vid, some of the clips have been replaced entirely, since the flow of the images is slightly different when you can actually see people's faces. (The main change from the original is the instrumental bridge scene, which now includes a number of different clips. The original can still be viewed here.)

Vid: Guardians of the Galaxy - Holy (remastered)

This is one of the two GotG vids I made back in May/June, now remastered with HD footage! In addition to replacing all the clips with better-quality ones, I also swapped out a few of them and recut a couple parts of the vid, so it's a little different now than it was. (The old one is still on Youtube if you want to compare. Original DW entry here.)

Vorkosigans for the win! (Literally.)

There aren't very many years when I have really strong opinions on Hugo award winners, but this was one of those years when there was one category where I did have very strong opinions, and I'm completely delighted that the Vorkosigan books won for best series. (Full list of winners and nominees here.)

This isn't specifically because of my personal feelings about it (all the nominated series are ones that I either personally really enjoy or have heard good things about). It's because, of all the series on the list, it's the only one that I consider really, truly groundbreaking at the time it came out. Yes, the series has dated badly in some ways, but it's still kind of amazing to me that these books (the first half-dozen or so, anyway) were written in the 1980s. They stand out much less today, with so much more diversity of books available -- not just in the kinds of people in the books, but the kind of books that are around in the genre. But even by modern standards, these books are kind of weird (one part mil-SF, one part generation saga, one part comedy of manners). And at the time they were written, they were really, truly visionary. There just wasn't anything else like them. I think they were the first SF books I ever read where gay and agender and disabled characters were just there, as an ordinary human component of the future -- and yes, I know that is one aspect of the books that hasn't aged very well, but it was the 1980s! One thing that sticks in my head is LMB's account of what made her write Ethan of Athos: as a mom herself, she had a conversation with some male friends about whether men would be able to raise children by themselves (without a woman in the picture). She thought it was possible. Not a single one of her male friends agreed. I mean, literally didn't think it was a thing that could happen. So she went and wrote Ethan of Athos about an all-male planet to prove them wrong.

That's how much the world has changed in the last 30 years, and that's the milieu that the early books in the series were written in, and yet, books like Shards of Honor and the early Miles books are still completely readable today; they've dated a bit, but to me, anyway, they don't feel nearly as dated as the vast majority of 1970s/80s sci-fi does now.

So yeah, that's why I had strong feelings on that category, and that's why I'm really thrilled it went the way I was hoping it would go. The other series are excellent books. All of them have their own individual strengths; many of them do well what the Vorkosigan books don't. But I wanted LMB to win because, though they have their flaws, I think her books are really, truly visionary, groundbreaking, and influential in a way the others aren't, and that's what I think the Hugo awards (ideally) should recognize.

Random Rivers of London question

I finally got around to reading The Furthest Station, which I had pre-ordered and has been sitting on my Kindle ever since my pre-order came in, and I am now wondering - did anyone else who bought the Kindle version of this get what appears to be an ARC version? It's full of typos (I normally notice a typo or two in any published book, because I just have the kind of brain that notices them, but this one was more on the level of the kind of thing I expect from competently written but unbeta'd fanfic - several noticeable typos or misused words per chapter) and there were also what appear to be notes to the "translator" scattered throughout (translator from UK to US English, that is). ETA: Never mind about that last one, as it's apparently intentional; see comments!

I didn't really mind, and it didn't make for a poor reading experience - I enjoyed the book; I'm not going to demand a refund or anything - but I am curious if I'm the only one who had this experience. I skimmed the Amazon reviews to see if anyone mentioned it, but didn't notice anyone else bringing up anything like that.

What makes me fall in love with things

I was inviting people to ask me questions on Tumblr last night, and one of the things I ended up talking about is what makes me fall for things (books, movies, TV shows) in a fandom kind of way. I decided to post that here as well, because it took me a long time to figure it out but I did eventually figure it out, and I thought it was interesting. There are always a few outliers that don't quite fit this, or fit it in unusual ways, but for the most part, this is what makes the difference for me between something I merely like, and something I write fanfic for and can't stop talking about to anyone who'll hold still long enough.

Bingo cards

I actually managed to finish a line on my genprompt-bingo card doing SSR Confidential - I just picked a line and used the prompts in it for inspiration for the various treats I wrote. It worked well. XD I haven't decided if I'm going to go for something more advanced on that card or just post it ...

Anyway, here are all my current cards: my newest h/c bingo one, genprompt-bingo, trope bingo, and tic-tac-woe (apocalypses).

Guardians of the Galaxy fic recs (+1 vid)

I didn’t start noting down fics I wanted to rec until a couple of weeks after my first flurry of fic-reading in the fandom, so a bunch of excellent fic isn’t on here; plus, I know I missed some even after I started adding them. But I’ve been adding fics to this document for over a month now, and I decided that if I waited until I got around to going back through my bookmarks and getting all the things I missed, I was just going to keep failing to do it.

So. Recs! Presented here in no particular order. Spoilers for GotG2.

New h/c bingo card!

I'm almost certainly going to sign up for [community profile] rarepairfest, once I finish getting my signup written. Probably with Agent Carter, Guardians of the Galaxy, and ... I'm still figuring out a third one that sounds fun. Supergirl? White Collar?

I have also acquired an h/c bingo card! This is round 8, which means it's been going on for 8 years (omfg!). And I've been doing it almost every year. I think there was a year in there I didn't do it, and there have definitely been years I haven't completed a bingo (and one year I blacked out my card - though admittedly it took me 'til the amnesty period to do it), but in general, I really look forward to getting each year's card. So here is this year's.

Midsummer night

Still awake at 2 a.m., and I happened to look out the window and notice the sky in the north was really beautiful, in that odd intersection of dusk and dawn that happens when there's only an hour or two between sunset and sunrise. So I had to run out and take some pictures. This is 2 a.m. on the summer solstice, just south of the Arctic Circle.

Guardians of the Galaxy vid: What You Wanted

I wanted to make a video to showcase how pretty these movies are. I think one reason why I've been wallowing around in these movies lately (and in space-opera-type sci-fi, generally) is because it's such a lovely, hopeful feeling to imagine this wide galaxy full of wonder and beauty, filled with gorgeous, foreign places and alien people just living their lives, out there beyond the skies of Earth. So I wanted to make a vid about that, and also about the feels, of course.

Low-quality footage will be replaced with better when I have the Vol. 2 DVD.

Everything is space pirates

I have been generally sparing everyone here and keeping it on Tumblr, but I've been completely gone for Guardians of the Galaxy for the last month or so. I really, really was not expecting to fall for something else in the MCU after more or less noping out of the Avengers over the last couple of years (although I've been vicariously enjoying [personal profile] sheron having so much fun with Steve/Tony; it's made me feel much warmer and happier about the MCU overall, so thanks for that, [personal profile] sheron!), but GotG is separate enough from the main MCU that, like Agent Carter, it doesn't feel the same.

It's just so gloriously weird. It's been a long time since I've watched a mainstream action movie that was as quirky and strange and almost indy-feeling as GotG Vol. 2 was (it made me think a lot of the zany, IDGAF weirdness of the sci-fi and fantasy movies of my childhood, back when things like Labyrinth and Wizards were popular). It's basically a total love letter to children of the 1970s/80s, and it's got that combination of funny/serious that's common to most of the things I've really lost my mind for in a fandom kind of way (starting with anime of the 90s and early 2000s - I've actually noticed quite a bit of overlap between people who really liked this movie and people who are also anime fans, and I think that makes sense, because this is about the closest thing I've seen to an original, live-action, Western version of shounen anime; it's got a similar blend of heartfelt emotions, slapstick humor, and WTF wierdness).

It also fits really well with a Kismet headspace, so it doesn't even require as much mental track-switching as flipping back and forth between Kismet and my other creative projects (urban fantasy-ish shifter romance, Agent Carter fanfic, etc) normally does.

I've been really enjoying Tumblr fandom for this one, because it's just so positive, in general, and I've been putting most of my thoughts about it on Tumblr, so if you don't follow me on Tumblr or aren't over there, but are interested in this, I'm going to link under the cut to my recent GotG Tumblr posts and fic and stuff like that.

Even the links contain GotG Vol. 2 spoilers, so don't click the cut if you don't want spoilers!

Agent Carter fanworks exchange year 2 is A GO

31 fanworks in SSR Confidential 2017 are live! Authors/creators will be revealed on the 15th. There's also a "guess the creator" post this year.

Dreamwidth question

Does anyone know if there is a way to force a community to load comment pages in the default DW style (the pink-on-gray one) unless the user's style overrides it? That is, individual journals can be set to have "light" comment pages instead of the main journal style; you do it from the "site skins" section of the settings. But when I switch to any of my communities, the "site skins" options vanish.

(The reason why I want to do it is because I cannot find a community site scheme that doesn't produce what are, to my eyes, cluttered and hard-to-read comment pages, especially for people unfamiliar with DW. The pink one isn't perfect, but it's far and away less cluttered and easier to figure out the comment nesting. WHY CAN YOU NOT F*CKING DO THIS.)

ETA: While I'm at it, why is it so incredibly hard to keep the DW journal site style page from snapping back to your main journal without telling you it's done so? Is that a browser issue on my end, or something that happens to other people? At least this time I only managed to change my tagline to that of the community I was editing. Typically I end up changing my entire site style every time I try to edit a community, because it WON'T TELL YOU - it's just like "yep, still working as [community name]" and then changes your entire journal. >___> My least favorite thing about DW is probably the a;skjf;ldsj;lad;; community management, in general.

ETA2: Thank you so much to [personal profile] ratcreature for telling me how - I was completely wrong about which part of the settings it was in (it's actually the ticky box in the above link that says to use the chosen style instead of the site style, which is ticked by default, but if you untick it, the pages show up exactly as I want them). For some reason I never parsed that phrasing as doing what it actually does.

Fandom misc

SSR Confidential assignments are due tonight at midnight(ish). I'm not going to be too much of a hard case about the deadline, but I'll be going through in the morning and assigning pinch hitters for anything that doesn't have an assignment or extension. So get 'em in, or contact me to ask for an extension!

I was just putting in nominations for [livejournal.com profile] rarepairfest, which I'm probably going to sign up for. With a couple of obvious exceptions, nearly all of my current fleet of ships are small enough to qualify for the fest rules (under 200 complete works of 1000+ words on AO3) - including some I didn't think would be, like Peter/Gamora (there's relatively little fic for it!) and Neal/Sara. It's a minimum of 3 fandoms with minimum 1 ship each to sign up, just in case this is relevant to anyone's interests! Signups aren't 'til later this month.

Still planning on running a GotG exchange (probably going to be called "Hooked on a Feeling"), but I haven't done anything about it yet, especially since I am currently flattened by a spring cold. Blargh. This week appears to be falling down a black hole of Accomplishing Nothing Much. I really, really need to get my garden put in, but trying to muster the energy to go out there and run a rototiller doesn't seem to be happening.

NOPE

I clicked in a special weather statement and discovered THIS ATROCITY:

... Snow at higher elevations of the interior through Friday...

Snow will develop at elevations above 1000 feet late tonight and Thursday. Snow will melt after it hits the ground in most areas, but above 2000 feet of elevation snow could stick... with 2 to 4 inches of accumulation. This accumulating snow is expected to impact the summits of the Elliott, Dalton and Steese highways and the Richardson Highway through the Alaska Range.

It's almost the end of MAAAAYYYYYYY ...

Well, the summer I worked in Denali Park, it very memorably dumped several inches of snow around June 6 or so, and my husband likes to talk about the year it snowed in his hometown (Glennallen) on the Fourth of July parade, so I shouldn't complain too much or I'll probably regret it. I'm glad I haven't put my garden in yet, though.
