Fandom updates

New community: [community profile] fanifesto, for fandom manifestos (fandom/ship/character/etc). In case it is relevant to your interests! There's nothing there yet, but it's very new.

I'm torn between the urge to rec some of the things that I'm into, and the awareness that most of the things I'm into are actually not that good, objectively speaking. XD

Don't let that hold you back. There is always at least one other person (usually more) who will be equally into whatever it might be. Your very subjective opinion is valid (and useful) in a fannish environment.

As a fellow fan of Things of Dubious Merit, I would love to read your manifestos. "This is awful, and here are all the reasons why my id and I fell for it anyway! :D" I bet it would be hilarious and validating.

Ahh, very valid. I guess for me it all depends on the tone, at least if the people poo-pooing the thing are knowingly doing it in the same space where I'm trying to enjoy it.

I would still love to hear you chatter about your faves, with or without qualifiers!

Thank you. Checking out the new comm.

You should absolutely rec some of the things you're into.*waggles eyebrows*
Hey, how else are we going to learn about new stuff?

Objectivity's only place in fandom is to recognize that everybody else's Things are just as subjective, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something a lying liar face spectacularly uninformed or possibly willfully delusional.

Yeah, I realize I lucked out in the brain department in this regard in a way the vast majority of (female) fans of my acquaintance seem not to have. I may otherwise have internalized the "you are less deserving of taking up (all the different connotations of) space" messages of my misogynist culture, but when it comes to my interests, the attempts to tell me they had less objective value backfired. Which made the idea of less subjective value backfire, which is actually one of the entry points for me interrogating the whole system. So. It's a topic on which I have Opinions, as the strikethroughs will show.
